Antecedentes
It was with great concern that BMW Motorrad USA had to communicate the initial Stop Ride notification for the new MY14 R 1200 RT equipped with optional Dynamic ESA system. Yesterday's urgent DCS Broadcast message was very brief, its primary focus was on the “Stop Ride” requirement and to inform our customers immediately. BMW Motorrad USA would like to thank every dealer for the immediacy in your response and fast action in this request. You expeditiously notified the customers, kudos to all. BMW is also contacting customers to ensure we have effectively communicated the stop ride requirement. This evening we have additionally posted a press release and post within the BMW Motorrad USA Facebook page regarding this issue. Since yesterday, we have been preparing logistics and communicating with teams here in Woodcliff Lake and Munich. Next steps are to begin the process of supporting our customers and identify our plans for repairing their motorcycles.
Background Information
The optionally equipped rear Dynamic ESA shock of the 2014 MY R 1200 RT was improperly produced and it is possible for the piston rod within the shock absorber to break without warning. If this occurs, it would affect handling and stability of the motorcycle, and increase the risk of a crash. [HIGHLIGHT2]There have been two noted cases of the shock failing in this manner in other markets (not in USA), fortunately there were no injuries as a result[/HIGHLIGHT2]. Worldwide, there are approximately 8000 MY 2014 R 1200 RT motorcycles affected; the US market has approximately 804 that have been identified to have the rear Dynamic ESA shock replaced.
Voluntary Recall Status
BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall involving the replacement of the Dynamic ESA Shock Absorber on these affected motorcycles. NHTSA was verbally notified on June 5, 2014; further notification (recall filing) will occur on/before June 11, 2014. Customer notification by First Class mail is currently planned for July, after approval by NHTSA.
Parts
BMW Motorrad USA will be provided status on the inbound parts availability as soon as possible. At the moment the existing parts supply of affected shocks has been frozen, we will provide follow up information on replacement parts availability as soon as possible.
